§ 12-81. Bicycle license tag; fee.

  • (a)

    "Bicycles," as used in this section, shall include motorcycles, motorbikes and bicycles operated by foot power or otherwise.

    (b)

    It shall be unlawful for any person to use or operate a bicycle in the city without first obtaining from the chief of police or his duly designated representative a permit for the use of such bicycle and having the bicycle duly registered as set forth in this article.

    (c)

    No bicycle shall be operated within the city unless the same has exhibited thereon the official license tag of the city, to be registered bi-annually.

    (d)

    The owner of every bicycle to be operated in the city shall make application for a permit and registration and the issuance of a license tag within thirty (30) days after the acquisition of such bicycle for use in the city.

    (e)

    The application for permit and registration shall be made in writing by the owner of the bicycle on forms provided by the chief of police and said application for registration shall contain the name and address of the owner, the make, type and color of the bicycle, a statement as to whether the bicycle was purchased new or used, from whom the bicycle was purchased, and any other information which is deemed necessary by the police department in order to properly carry out the terms of this section; the application shall be signed by the owner of the bicycle.

    (f)

    Upon completing the application and furnishing the written information for registration, the owner of said vehicle shall pay to the chief of police or his duly designated representative a fee of five dollars ($5.00), for which he shall receive an official bicycle license plate bearing the number of the license issued to the owner, which license plate shall be at all times exhibited in a prominent place on the bicycle licensed as aforesaid.

    (g)

    The license and license plate hereinabove referred to shall be transferable in the event of a change in ownership of the bicycle. In such event the purchaser or new owner of said bicycle shall make application for transfer of the license within thirty (30) days from the date the bicycle becomes his property.

    (h)

    The owner and operator of every bicycle in the city shall operate said bicycle in strict accordance with existing ordinances; and the violation of any existing laws or ordinances with reference to the operation of bicycles in the city shall be sufficient cause for the revocation of the license hereinabove provided, which revocation shall be only by a court of competent jurisdiction after due hearing with reference thereto.

    (i)

    In addition to other penalties, any violation of this section shall be sufficient cause for the revocation of the license herein provided for.
